My First Chenette In 2 Years

July 25, 2015

You may know it as mamón, quenette, or guinep, but I grew up knowing it to be chenette. One of my favourite tropical fruits, chenette occupies a special place in my heart. Much like my love for fresh coconuts, my love for this fruit is unparalleled. This week I was reunited with it for the first time in about 2 years and I thought it would be something worth sharing.

Its flesh inside is protected by a green "shell" that when broken, reveals an almost salmon coloured "pulp." If you're squeamish when it comes to funky textures, you might want to pass on this one. But if you're like me and you don't let anything hinder your love for food (or fruit), you won't mind the somewhat "pasty" texture.

They look like oversized green droplets attached to a stem.
Please ignore my un-manicured hands.
This one kind of looks like a mushy brain.
Not aesthetically pleasing, but it tasted great, so who cares!
Can anyone say, "Yummy in mah tummy!"
And when you're all done, you're left with this little (big) guy.
Don't eat him!
That's the seed.

I probably should insert a disclaimer at some point, so here it is. This probably isn't the fruit to give a young child, or a clumsy adult (not sure if anyone can really eat clumsily) because its texture and size make it the ideal choking hazard. So be careful my little Schwans! Who ever said falling in love didn't have its risks?!
