#RICHKIDS OF BEVERLY HILLS

July 15, 2014

This is certainly going to be quite the "first post". I've been toying with the idea of maybe posting something like this for a few days now and, well, clearly I have given in. (Disclaimer) This is in no way, shape, or form an "attack" launched on E! network's show, the episodes just got me to thinking. And it was made pretty clear to me that the stuff we value nowadays, all the stuff we waste so much time and energy on, at the end of the day, it's all just that...a bunch of STUFF!

I'm a part of my school's newspaper, and before the school year had ended I was assigned to write an article that tackled the phenomenon that is...*drum roll please* the cellphone. I got to thinking as I was writing and I realised that it wasn't that everyone was so attached to their phones because it was a cool-looking piece of plastic, they couldn't bare to part with their cellphones because the device had become a portal through which  they sought validation and acceptance.

People are constantly seeking confirmation from others, as if their dozens of notifications validate anything of substantial value. But social media platforms allow for a momentary escape from the rawness of an experience..or just life, and open up the doors to millions of virtual hands, all of which are seemingly welcoming and longing for their warm embrace. At the end of the day, we feel drawn to our phones and all this stuff because every "like", every "favourite" and every "retweet" equates to having someone's complete and undivided attention, whether it be for 6secs or 1min, confirming the phenomenon that is (not the cellphone this time) but the unquenchable need for "acceptance". All this stuff we have is just a vessel through which our source of artificial confidence passes through on this journey we call life (how oh so very original Hannah).

While #RichKids of Beverly Hills is undoubtedly entertaining (their lavish vacations and lifestyles in general can really hypnotize a girl for 30mins) it is far from reality for many of us. Life's too short to be worrying over splitting the bill or wearing shoes that are soo last season. It's time you stop looking to your "followers" for validation and start living your life for YOU! Go on...try it. Come back and let me know how you feel. :)
